It leads to a lot of scripted moments, though this is hardly surprising, given the often-poor AI. Sometimes, you can find yourself shooting at endlessly respawning troops, only to realize you need to shuffle in another direction into a closer-quarters area, where bayonets await. In this campaign mode, there seems to be a greater reliance on long-distance shooting than previous outings–notably a bunch of pretty damn tough snipers–though this is counterbalanced with do-or-die bayonet-charging enemies, which appear a little too often.
Activision / Sledgehammer GamesĪs predicted, Vanguard’s combat is dependable and solid. Vanguard's lighting can turn even the simplest things into incredible scenes. The use of lighting and sound is among the best I’ve seen in any game, creating atmosphere and beauty out of seemingly nothing. That’s not to say it doesn’t have its share of high-octane, expansive landscapes, even if you can’t physically explore them the initial Stalingrad mission provides by far the most amazing of these, and might be one of the top-five all-time Call of Duty moments.
The game adopts a surprisingly linear level design, which more often than not forces you along restrictive paths you’ll often get mown down in moments if you pick your own route, usually by accident. It soon becomes clear that Vanguard doesn’t really deliver any huge, awe-inspiring maps to truly probe, despite your locations.
Scenes between each of these acting heavyweights truly carry the story arc, but it soon becomes clear that these snippets, plus the cast’s consistently brilliant voice acting, do a remarkable amount of heavy lifting between and during the game’s nine sojourns. Terrell Clayton is pitch-perfect in his role of the 93rd’s sergeant “Booker” Washington in their real-life Bougainville campaign Welshman Thomas Jones (Max Deacon) is frankly adorable Australian desert rat Des Wilmot (Nikolai Nikolaeff) may be the funniest character in recent CoDs, confirmed by his request you “shoot that fucking sky wanker” when attacked by a strafing Stuka dive bomber. The wealth of acting talent runs deep into supporting roles, too. He’s both recognizable as a friendly face, yet entirely believable in his role–it’s a long way off Charlie in Lost or Merry in Lord of the Rings, that’s for sure.ĭermot Monaghan steals the show as Jannick Richter. The true star of the antagonistic show is Dominic Monaghan, who assumes the role of conflicted Nazi pen-pusher Jannick Richter. The only exception to this theme is egotistical fighter ace Wade Jackson, whose wings are literally clipped by the Japanese, and soon learns what underdog status is after being rescued by the all-black, segregated 93rd Infantry.įraming the half-dozen’s direction is Nazi mega-baddie Hermann Freisinger–played with aplomb by Dan Donohue, despite his character’s depth barely going past “Nazi = bad”. Riggs is an underappreciated Australian among the British Army in the late empire days. Petrova is overlooked for frontline duties for being a woman. Kingsley is an educated black man in the 1940s. his wife and kid weren’t murdered by drug addicts.Įach character is an underdog. Wade Jackson (Derek Phillips), a self-satisfied US Navy pilot who looks like Max Payne if his life ended up being normal, i.e.Lucas Riggs (Martin Copping), a smart-mouthed Aussie stationed in North Africa, fighting as much with his unbearably British superiors as with the Axis and.Polina Petrova (Laura Bailey), a crack-shot Russian sniper who wants to kill every Nazi and doesn’t give a shit about anything else.Arthur Kingsley ( played by Chiké Okonkwo), the British-Cameroonian leader of the taskforce, whose experience in D-Day brings intelligence, resolve, and inner strength that unites the squad. It features a bunch of overused jokes and memes that only get more annoying every time you hear them.Using key battles in WWII–Stalingrad, El Alamein, and Midway in particular–you’re introduced to the bunch of misfits whose diversity really is their strength, played by a ridiculously talented cast: ★★★ Please SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and SHARE ★★★ Thanks :)Ĭrack-Life is a retarded, unfunny, racist, offensive mod.
